How To Develop Empathy In Your Child
Sep 16, 2024
Empathy in children and how we should practice it in everyday life can be very well expressed by saying: put yourself in the other’s shoes. Empathy is the ability to be aware of feelings of others and to imagine what it would look like in their position. For children, empathy can be the key to harmonious, ethical relationships to prevent various forms of bullying.
Be Empathetic With Your Child
A child develops empathy as he feels it, experiences it with people around him. The more empathetic a parent is, the more likely their child is to develop this skill. When you are with your little one, discuss and construe why it is important to practice empathy and why lack of empathy can be harmful. Show him empathic behaviours around him, either from his daily life or from his favourite books or drawings.
Teach Your Child Their Emotions And Encourage Them To Express
For your child to be empathetic, he first needs to recognize his emotions. We are the first to label emotions of our children since they were babies and put them into words. Talk openly with your little one about emotions, rather than rejecting or hiding them. Debate his feelings to connect them with specific actions and to see what causes each state.
Show Them Empathy Through Your Actions
Show your kids through your own actions what it means to be empathetic. Often children imitate us more than they listen to us. Your child notices your behaviour and repeats it. They mimic your facial expressions, movements, habits. In the same way, they will notice when you show empathy towards others, towards your life partner, friends, and strangers.
Be A Rational And Non-Aggressive Role Model For Your Child
Although it is hard not to get upset when your kid does something stupid, try not to use anger to change his behaviour. If your child rejects or scolds another one, ask why he feels this way. That can lead to a discussion about the other child’s actions and why this rejection occurred, but concentrate on how you can overcome this situation together. Education by personal example is much more effective, especially if you keep calm.
Show understanding to those around you. Talk to family members and seek to help them. In this way, your child will learn to behave the same way in similar situations.
When your child empathizes with others, praise this behaviour. Awareness and praise of empathic behaviour encourage these forms of action in the future.
Be Receptive And Avoid Punishing
Never punish your child because they feel sad or angry. Reveal clearly and concisely that all emotions are welcome and learn to manage them together in a healthy way through discussions and reflections.
Aid your child to understand their condition and identify their emotions, and when it is so difficult to communicate with them, try through a toy. Everyone likes toys, and this is the fastest way to help kids get out of their negative emotions.
