Ways To Improve Fine Motor Skills At Home
Dec 26, 2023
Full development of a preschool child is unthinkable without developing fine motor skills and why it is so important to train precise finger movements, which are affected by motor skills. Why it does not reach a sufficient level sometimes, and how it can be developed?
Fine motor skills of wrist are needed to perform precise actions using fingers. Child begins to develop as an infant and stops around the age of nine. Activities of fingers are mostly automatic for adults. It is a process that children can learn, and through it, they learn to coordinate systems of body. These days, children often have insufficient motor development.
There are several reasons for this:
First, parents often allow their children to spend a lot of time with electronic devices such as tablets and phones. Gadgets not only do not promote development of fine motor skills but also hinder their development.
Second, most of work that people previously did by hand is now done by machines. Children who used to be involved in homework from an early age do not have the opportunity to train coordination and fine motor skills today. Nowadays, everything is solved at the touch of a button.
Thirdly, in the hurry of modern society, parents do not have time to get involved in full development of baby. Parents often lack the patience to teach a child to dress. They dress a child up much faster themself. This is also done by kindergarten teachers, whose groups are crowded and do not have time and patience to teach and wait for everyone.
Some General Principles And Recommendations to Improve Fine Motor Skills:
1. Select activities with the appropriate level of difficulty. If you see your child is not coping with a task, offer them something easier. That will prepare them to learn the new skill.
2. Give your child a chance to repeat. Parents often think that if a child has already learned something, then further actions are meaningless. However, this is incorrect. Child develops not only when he overcomes difficulties but also when he performs the activities that he is doing well enough. Thus, children hone their skills, gain self-confidence and prepare themselves for more complex movements.
3. Help your child as needed. Be patient! Give your child enough time and opportunity to dress and serve himself at table. Teach them to wash and dry their hands thoroughly. Sometimes help your child to clean liquid spilled on the table. Such a strategy is much better for a child than when everything is always done for him.
4. Transact with your child regularly. Make it a ritual by spending time together. Do not give child electronic devices at all or limit child’s total screen time to one hour a day.
