Learning Outcome 1 - Identity

Children feel safe, secure and supported: This outcome is based on developing safe and secure attachments with educators and other children, having predictable routines, creating a sense of belonging, encouraging the expression of ideas and feelings, and exploring identity through role play. Toys we recommend to foster this are those that help explore and identify emotions (i.e. eggspressions), and encourage exploration of role play (i.e. home corner toys)

Autonomy, interdependence, resilience & sense of agency: This outcome is based on co-operation and working collaboratively with others. Children gain confidence to approach new situations and engage in negotiation and sharing. They persist when faced with challenges. Toys that foster this are those that encourage working together (i.e. games or shared activities) and those that challenge children in some way.

Children develop knowledgeable and confident identities: This outcome is based on allowing children to feel recognised and respected for who they are, exploring identities & points of view through dramatic play, sharing aspects of their culture and celebrating and sharing contributions with others. Toys that foster this are multicultural dolls, culturally based books and stories, dress up’s and more.

Learn to interact with others with care, empathy and respect: This outcome is based on assisting children to empathise with others, showing interest in other children/the group, engaging in shared play experiences and developing awareness and respect for other perspectives. Great toys to foster this are role play toys based on concern for others, such as baby doll play which involves looking after someone else, and books which share different perspectives.
